今年で59回を迎えたアメリカ演劇界最高の名誉“トニー賞”の発表と授賞式が2005年6月5日（日本時間6月6日）にニューヨークのラジオシティ・ミュージカルホールで行われました。、
注目の作品賞は＜ミュージカル＞では“Monty Python's Spamalot”（モンティ・パイソンのスパマロット）、＜演劇＞では“Doubt”（ダウト）が受賞。
ミュージカルでは最多の14ノミネートを受けた“Monty Python's Spamalot”でしたが、この他は助演女優賞（Sara Ramirez）と演出賞（Mike
Nichols）の3部門での受賞に留まる一方で、“The Light in the Piazza”（ライト・イン・ザ・ピアッツァ）が主演女優賞（Victoria
Clark）、オリジナルスコア賞（Adam Guettel）など6部門を受賞。
ミュージカルでは主要キャストの4部門でそれぞれ異なる作品の出演者が受賞するなど、突出した作品の無い年となりました。
また、演劇では“Doubt”（ダウト）が作品賞のほか、主演女優賞（Cherry Jones）、助演女優賞（Adriane Lenox）、演出賞（Doug
Hughes）の4部門を得て、前評判通りの結果となりました。
日本人初のブロードウェイ演出家として宮本亜門さんが演出した作品”Pacific Overtures”（太平洋序曲）は、最優秀リバイイバルミュージカル部門を初め、最優秀ミュージカル衣裳デザイン部門にコシノジュンコさん、最優秀ミュージカル美術デザイン部門に松井るみさん、最優秀編曲部門のJonathan
Tunickさんと4部門でノミネートされていましたが、残念ながら受賞はなりませんでした。
